About Matt Greenhill

Matt Greenhill, b. Birmingham, England, is multi disciplinary artist who works across painting, drawing and photography.  His work has been shown in institutional galleries such as the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, The New Art Gallery Walsall and The Art House,  Worcester. He was selected for the inaugural Birmingham Open Exhibition and in July 2024 his painting of Bordesley Junction on the Grand Union Canal was reproduced and displayed within Victoria Square in the City centre.

His work is typically set in and around urban locations. After a hiatus he resumed painting in 2020. Often described as a colourist, French impressionist and post impressionist painter Paul Cézanne has been a great influence on his painting technique. Cézanne’s work set in Provence is a source of reference and frequently used as a device to refresh his otherwise urban colour palette.

Although there is an interrelationship between painting and photography, painting landscapes en plein air and portraits from life have become increasingly integral to his practice.

He was part of Grand Union Gallery's volunteer programme in Digbeth which is at the he heart of Birmingham’s vibrant arts community. He has since made a series of paintings that detail and chronicle this post industrial location and the enjoyable time he spent there. These works have been likened to those of American Realist painter Edward Hopper. Time spent in Birminghams's artist quarter also led him to consider more the social and political impact of art and how it reflects and affects the world and brings about positive change. Beyond the aesthetic,  he sometimes uses the canvas as a platform to address pertinent matters such as social justice and the climate emergency.

He is alumni of the University of Central England in Birmingham (Birmingham City University) and has a work in the collection of The New Art Gallery Walsall.
